Still, we have our moments of drama and excitement. And obviously a lot of my social circle are translators or otherwise linguistically interested. One of my friends came up with a unique idea for their English as a Second Language class — Speed Dating. The Idea She noted that many of the students in her class were not only struggling to learn English as they started their new lives, but were also lonely, being newly arrived in a strange country.

So, she had a brilliant idea: Why not transform one night of her class into a Speed Dating Event — with the one caveat that all of the conversations had to be conducted in English. This combined a few things that would benefit her students: The Result The event was a smashing success. It was structured as a legitimate speed dating event — the classroom chairs were arranged to face each other. The women sat on one side, the men on the other. Then she rang a bell and the men stood up and moved to the seat to their left with the last man in line looping around to the first seat.

The noise, the pressure, the excitement all took the students out of the normally sleepy and serious classroom environment and applied a level of immersion coupled with equal skill levels, which made everyone more comfortable.

At all ages and in all walks of life, attractive people are judged more favorably, treated better, and cut more slack. Mothers give more affection to attractive babies. Teachers favor more attractive students and judge them as smarter. Attractive adults get paid more for their work and have better success in dating and mating. And juries are less likely to find attractive people guilty and recommend lighter punishments when they do. Many factors can play into personal attractiveness — the way you dress, the way you act, the way you carry yourself, even things that are hard or impossible to change, like social status and wealth, race, and body size and shape.

Their goal was love, or maybe sex, or maybe some combination of the two. They were there for speed dating. The women sat at separate numbered tables while the men moved down the line, and for two solid hours they did a rotation, making small talk with people they did not know, one after another, in three-minute increments. I had gone to record the night, which was put on by a company called Professionals in the City, and what struck me was the noise in the room.

The sound of words, of people talking over people talking over people talking. It was a roar. What were these people saying? And what can we learn from what they are saying?

While there are major advantages of my German and my English giving me a head start thanks to many linguistic similarities, I have had a major set-back in this mission that has been slowing me down tremendously; simply finding opportunities to converse! Dutch culture is different to others I am used to; everyone has been very nice and polite to me, and nobody speaks English to me, but after a brief first conversation they tend to disappear, and there is little hope of seeing them again due to their always packed schedules.

They are a bit too organised. Luckily I am finally getting through to some people and starting to socialise properly, hanging out for hours or even almost an entire day, speaking just in Dutch. But for the most part, when I meet people I tend to have a similar first introduction conversation over and over again. This is a terrible way to make progress to be able to discuss many different topics required to be fluent in a language.
